The census of 1891 shows these two "loyal Heckmondwickians" as neighbours on Eldon Street, Heckmondwike. At the time Samuel had seven children and Thomas, five. The pair were determined not to be outdone by the Cleckheaton Conspirators (See (41)) in gaining a good school for Heckmondwike. They fought with the Cleckheaton Conspirators to gain a good school for Heckmondwike - the result being the building of both Heckmondwike and Whitcliffe Mount Grammar Schools.
